STEM Equity Ally: Supporting Multilingual Youth in STEM
Date: April 15, 2024 9am-11am
Location: Zoom (link will be sent with registration confirmation)
Facilitated by: Rob Hillhouse
In this interactive Zoom workshop, we will discuss ways to make your STEM program more accessible and supportive for youth who are adding English to their languages. Rob will share some of the common barriers for multilingual youth and their families to participate in STEM programs, and ways you and your staff can begin to address them. Rob will also discuss research-based practices that are effective for creating more effective environments for multilingual youth. You will walk away with actionable steps you can take right away, as well as ideas for longer term shifts you may wish to implement in your program.
Rob/Rab Hillhouse (he/him) has twenty-two years' experience in education serving students who are adding English to their languages. Bilingual in Scots and English, he has taught at the college, high school, and middle school levels. He has served as a Teacher on Special Assignment in Beaverton, Oregon and Austin, Texas. Through advocating, coaching, and intentional design he has created STEM programs that allow students to flourish regardless of English proficiency.
A $100 stipend is available to participating educators who otherwise would not be paid for their time to attend. Educators must serve youth in the Portland Metro, East Metro or South Metro/Salem regions.
