Building Joy & Justice in Mathematics through Inclusive Practice for 6-8 Educators


Many students, especially Learners of Color, are not afforded spaces where they have voice, choice and agency over their own math learning. This lack of agency negatively impacts students’ math identities, as well as students’ view of the importance of math in their daily life. Simultaneously, teachers also learned math within a similar kind of educational system, and also may not see themselves as “math people.” This institute seeks to address these problems. The hybrid institute offer educators 24 hours of professional learning that focuses on inclusive, culturally-responsive practices in math teaching. as well as to grow their own math identities so that they may better support students to grow their identities. With the support of facilitators and colleagues, educators will gain the skills and knowledge to modify or create mathematics lessons centering equity, joy, student identity and criticality.

When and Where

  • July 6-7, 4:00 - 7:00pm: 6 hours of synchronous Zoom workshops to launch the learning)

  • July 11 - August 11: 15 hours of flexible asynchronous learning and final project creation supported by a team of facilitators

  • August 11, 11:00am - 2:00pm: 3 hours of in-person celebration to conclude the learning and share final projects.

6-8 Educators and Instructional Leaders from

  • Banks School District

  • Beaverton School District

  • Forest Grove School District

  • Hillsboro School District

  • Portland Public Schools

  • Oregon Coast STEM Hub

What will I get from attending?

Each educator who completes the course will:

  • Receive a $1200 Stipend

  • Have access to no cost professional learning to engage in learning around connecting student math identity and agency, integrates social justice and mathematics, and explores ways to facilitate joyful math learning.

  • Design and walk away with math focused lessons/units for the classroom.

  • Earn 24 PDUs (college credit may be possible if there’s enough interest).
