Next Generation Science Standards: Exploring the Engineering Practices

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are Oregon’s science standards for K-12 education. These rigorous standards present a great challenge to educators, as well as incredible opportunities for Oregon students. This free virtual workshop is for community STEM educators and classroom teachers interested in learning more about the standards, and the new vision for science and engineering education that they represent. Participants will engage in virtual collaborative learning experiences that align to the NGSS, and reflect on how this new vision can impact their program or classroom.

This workshop is designed for all educators (classroom teachers and informal educators). In this all-virtual session, we will explore the engineering design process through hands-on exploration and collaboration using household materials. This activity can also be modified to use with youth. The workshop will also introduce some digital tools to use to allow for collaboration In a virtual setting.

We will then unpack connections to the Next Generation Science Standards, and explore the importance of student and community-driven, justice-centered phenomena and problems, and prompts for participants to reflect on how you can add problem-solving into your virtual or hybrid learning.

This workshop is for educators who have attended the PMSP NGSS 1.0 workshops or have some other experience with the standards.
